About Chuqguna

Charles Smith, whose Lakota Sioux Indian name is “Chuqguna,” lives in the Tucson, Arizona desert with his wife Joan. Chuqguna has been handcrafting beautiful custom beaded “pictures” for many years, and now offers these unique works-of-art to you.

Each beautifully hand-crafted unique beadwork contains thousands of individual beads strung together on his handmade loom, the same way Chuqguna’s grandparents did before him.

Chuqguna painstakingly creates each work of art, one-by-one, from his own unique designs, each with specific meanings. No two

Each work of art is still handcrafted using needle and thread, with each bead interwoven into the threaded loom using a double-threaded weave. The result is a strikingly beautiful piece of art that must be seen to be truly appreciated.

Some of the larger pieces may take several months to create and may contain tens of thousands of beads. Larger works can often weigh in excess of ten pounds without the frame.

Beading Detail

You can often find Chuqguna demonstrating his beading technique at his exhibits. Refer to the Events page for exhibit locations and times.
